What Is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp which causes flaking and itching of the skin. It is more common in people with the skin conditions seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema, and also can be a reaction to hair or skin products.

Who Is at Risk for Dandruff?

It is unclear what exactly causes dandruff, but it is more common in people with oily skin or hair or who have family members with seborrheic dermatitis. It also is common in people infected with HIV.

Dandruff Symptoms

Symptoms of dandruff are flakes of skin that can be small and white or may be large and yellow in color. The flaking may appear on the scalp, eyebrows, nose, chest or back.

Dandruff is visible on the scalp.

Dandruff Treatments

The most effective over-the-counter treatments for dandruff are shampoos designed specifically for that use. Always try removing any crusty patches from your scalp before shampooing, which will allow it to work more effectively. The shampoo should be left on for about five minutes to give the ingredients time to work.

Dandruff shampoos may also be used on the beard.

Dandruff Prevention

Keeping your hair clean by washing it daily can help keep your scalp healthy. You may also want to avoid styling products like hair spray and hair gel, which can create a build-up of oil in your hair and on your scalp.

Also, spend more time in the sunlight, which has been shown to prevent dandruff, and protect yourself from the fungi that causes dandruff by eating plenty of B vitamins and healthy fats.
