CoolTone Treatment from U.S. Dermatology Partners

What is CoolTone?

While CoolTone was developed by Allergan, the makers of CoolSculpting, this treatment does not actually rely on cold to deliver results. Instead, the CoolTone device is an innovative, body sculpting technology that utilizes magnetic pulses to strengthen muscles and improve the appearance, tone, and definition of muscles. The CoolTone device is FDA-cleared for treating the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.

The CoolTone device itself is a free-moving unit with an attached computer screen. The hand tool in the CoolTone system is used to apply magnetic impulses to the targeted areas of the body. The entire procedure is precisely monitored via the attached screen.

How Does it Work?

While CoolTone is a member of the CoolSculpting family of body sculpting tools, it doesn’t actually require the application of cold temperatures. Where the CoolSculpting system uses very low temperatures to freeze and destroy stubborn fat cells, revealing the muscle definition below, CoolTone targets the muscle itself. Magnetic impulses are applied to the target muscle groups, using the CoolTone system. The impulses lead to contractions that strengthen and define the muscle. The procedure is safely performed in our office, and it is completely non-invasive. In most cases, you can visit us over your lunch break and head right back to the office or your regular routine.

Who is a Good Candidate for CoolTone?

Good candidates for CoolTone are healthy men and women, near their target body weight who wish to improve the tone, firmness, and strength of muscles in the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. Some patients do see minimal weight loss after CoolTone treatment, but the procedure is not an effective weight loss solution. If you have any implanted metal or electronic devices, especially in the target area, CoolTone might not be the right treatment option for you. Or, if you have loss of sensation in a target area, CoolTone may not be recommended. There are also a number of chronic and systemic health conditions that may make CoolTone less effective or less safe. The best way to determine if you’re a CoolTone candidate is to call the U.S. Dermatology Partners team in your area to schedule a consultation.

How is CoolTone Treatment Performed?

Treatment with CoolTone is simple and noninvasive, and the procedure can be comfortably completed in our state-of-the-art dermatology practices. To get started, we’ll have you visit our team for a consultation appointment. During this initial visit, your provider will examine the target area, ask health history questions, and answer your questions. If you decide that CoolTone is the right solution for your muscle-sculpting goals, we’ll schedule your treatment appointment. Most people are able to return to work or other daily activities immediately after the procedure, so you’ll just need to set aside an hour or two for the procedure itself.

During the treatment visit, we begin by taking images of the target area to use as a comparison tool to gauge your progress in the coming weeks. Then, we apply the CoolTone magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) device. We will slowly move the MMS device along the treatment area. Patients who receive CoolTone treatment describe the initial sensation as being similar to intense muscle contractions during a hard workout. This sensation typically lessens a few minutes into treatment. Compared with other MMS sculpting tools, CoolTone has 50% greater magnetic intensity, allowing the pulse to penetrate through skin and fat and target the muscles. The magnetic stimulation induces muscle contractions. When muscles are contracted, the body goes to work strengthening and increasing the fibers. After CoolTone, the muscles will be firmer and have a more defined appearance.

A few weeks after your initial treatment, you will return for a follow-up appointment. We’ll capture more images of the treatment area to compare with your original images. In most cases, we will recommend repeating the process a few more times to achieve the best results.

How Long Does CoolTone Treatment Take?

CoolTone is a great “lunch break” treatment option. Depending on the area being treated, the process is typically completed within one to two hours, and following the completely non-surgical treatment, you can go right back to your regular schedule, including exercise.

Are There any Side Effects to CoolTone Treatment?

Following CoolTone, the majority of patients experience few, if any, side effects. Most people say they had some muscle soreness that was comparable to pain after a hard workout. In addition to mild muscle aches, common adverse effects include temporary muscle spasms, pain in the joints or tendons, and erythema (localized skin redness). Not all patients experience even these mild side effects, but we can provide you with prescription pain relievers and topical ointments to help offset any adverse effects of CoolTone treatment.

For women who are menstruating or nearing their cycle, CoolTone may cause menstruation to begin more quickly, and it can increase cramping. We recommend women schedule treatments in the weeks immediately after the end of their cycle.

For patients with certain medical conditions, including Grave’s disease, bleeding disorders, and seizure disorders, CoolTone treatment may not be advisable. We will discuss all of your current medical diagnoses at your consultation visit. If we are ever in doubt about your safety, we may recommend clearing treatment with your general physician or specialist to ensure you safely complete the CoolTone procedure.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Following CoolTone treatment, you will start to see results within three to four weeks with the most dramatic results becoming visible within two to four months. The muscles take time to grow and change after the procedure, but the results are worth the wait!

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Your treatment plan will be uniquely geared toward helping you meet your muscle definition and strengthening goals, but most patients visit us for between 4 and 8 sessions.

How Long Will Results Last?

One significant positive side effect of CoolTone for many people is an increase in fat metabolism, and this improved fat-burning ability is usually permanent! The added muscle mass may not be permanent, but most patients are able to prolong their effects by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine. Additionally, we may recommend periodic CoolTone retreatment every 3 to 12 months for maximum impact.
