SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Spring weather brings outdoor activities, but dermatologists say proper skin protection is essential before damage occurs.
Dr. Arathi Rana, a dermatologist with six years of experience treating hair, skin and nail concerns, said one blistering sunburn in a lifetime can increase the risk of developing melanoma by 50%.
“Medical, procedural and cosmetic,” Rana said, describing the range of care she provides to patients of all ages.
Skin cancer prevention starts now
One in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to Rana. The disease is highly preventable with year-round protection measures.
Skin care routines protect skin health before damage is done, not just to keep up with trends or beauty standards, Rana said.
Spring skincare adjustments
While skin hydration is important in cold, dry winter months, spring requires different products.
“Transition to more of a lightweight type moisturizer. We want our skin breathing, feel light and non-greasy,” Rana said.
Sun protection remains critical. Rana recommends sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and sun protective clothing.
“Long sleeve shirts, a wide brim hat, it’s gonna prevent developing skin cancer as well as premature aging,” Rana said.
Add antioxidant serums
Antioxidant serum is another spring skincare addition that works with sunscreen.
“It is actually going to work in conjunction with your sunscreen. We’re looking for ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, these are going to neutralize damage that’s done to our skin from harmful UV rays,” Rana said.
Rana also recommends using an exfoliant to remove the thick winter layer of dead skin cells and unclog pores.
“Our skin is going to be glowy, it’s going to be dewy, it’s going to be ready for spring and summer,” Rana said.
