Each spring, The Washingtonian asks close to 13,000 doctors in DC, Maryland, and Virginia area to nominate a colleague in each of the 39 specialties. To ensure data accuracy, nominating physicians are sent an online survey prompting them to log in with an active medical-license number registered in DC, Maryland, or Virginia.
