At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Sterling area with their skin care concerns. It can be hard to figure out when you need to go to see a dermatologist for a skin problem. Chances are, if you’re unsure about whether you should see the dermatologist or not, it might be better to play it safe and make an appointment. There are a few times in general when you should promptly seek a dermatologist’s expertise.

If you notice a new mole or a spot on your skin that either suddenly appeared or changed appearance, or has an irregular shape, you should visit your dermatologist as soon as possible. These spots or growths could be skin cancer, and the dermatologist may need to remove them if they are malignant or could damage your appearance. In general, it’s a good idea to visit the dermatologist to be screened for cancer once a year.

Unmanageable conditions

Generally, whichever skin problem you have, if it doesn’t clear up in a couple of days or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter treatment, you might want to get help from a dermatologist. If you have a rash that doesn’t clear up on its own, a dermatologist can supply you with prescription medication or help you find the cause and avoid it. Problems such as acne can sometimes fail to respond to commercial solutions, and require treatment from a dermatologist.

Unattractive skin

Another time many people may not realize they should visit the dermatologist is when they want to improve the way their skin looks. Even if there is nothing medically wrong with your skin, problems such as wrinkles and scarring left by acne or even visible veins and sun spots can make your skin look unattractive. Dermatologists want you to have healthy, attractive skin, so many of them offer cosmetic services that can reduce or eliminate wrinkles and treat skin with imperfections such as scars and uneven pigmentation.
