At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners, we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Sterling area with their skin care concerns. The skin is the largest body organ. Therefore, when people develop skin conditions they can be affected physically as well as emotionally. Skin conditions can vary from mild to severe.
Acne
The most common skin condition is acne, which can vary from mild to severe. When the skin’s pores to the oil glands become clogged, acne develops. It can appear on the face, shoulders, neck, back, and chest. Acne includes pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. In more severe cases, nodular and cystic acne can form deep in the skin and leave scars. Studies show 80 percent of Americans will have acne at some point in their lives.
Eczema
The three common forms of eczema include:
- Atopic dermatitis – This is the most common form of eczema and is most common among children. It causes itchy rashes on the elbows and behind the knees.
- Allergic contact dermatitis – This begins to show in adulthood and is caused by factors including fragrances, cosmetic agents, and metals in jewelry.
- Nummular dermatitis – This involves red and flaky patches on the skin. Dry skin causes this form of eczema, which can itch.
