Read Full Article HereST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – For the first time in decades, the FDA has approved a new ingredient for sunscreens that’s coming to store shelves soon. Some dermatologists say it could be a great help in the battle to prevent skin cancer.
“The new ingredient is called Bemotrizinol, and it’s a chemical sunscreen agent to help block or absorb harmful UV rays,” explains Dr. Lawrence Samuels with U.S. Dermatology Partners.
Bemotrizinol blocks both UVA and UVB rays and is photo-stable. That means it breaks down more slowly in the sun, potentially offering better protection.
“Some of the older chemical sunscreen ingredients actually get somewhat degraded, rather than just give you total protection. And the new ingredient is more sun-stable. So it might give you greater protection,” said Dr. Samuels.
Bemotrizinol is transparent and less greasy. It’s been widely used in Europe and Asia for decades.
“It’s been tested in Europe and tested in the lab far more than some of the ingredients than we presently have,” said Dr. Samuels.
We asked the FDA why it took so long to approve it in the U.S.
The FDA sent us a statement reading in part, “The agency has not delayed the approval of new ingredients—the delay comes because information has not been provided to us,” saying it’s been waiting for more data from the manufacturer, especially on safety.
But dermatologists say the best sunscreen is the one you remember to use.
“The key is using it,” said Dr. Samuels.
