Understanding psoriasis
The redness, swelling, inflammation, and silver flakes characteristic of this condition are caused by increased blood flow, directed to nourish this buildup of skin. Those flaky crusts are dead skin cells. These abnormalities often appear as patches known as “plaques,” on the face, scalp, elbows, palms, lower back, knees, and soles of the feet. Plaques are also indicative of psoriasis vulgaris, which is the most common form, affecting around 80 percent of sufferers. Some DANV patients barely notice the inflammation; others are so embarrassed by the condition or so uncomfortable that they avoid social events.
Guttate psoriasis can resemble chicken pox. This variant is usually on the arms, legs, face, and ears. Inverse psoriasis likes moist areas, such as folds under the breasts or armpits. The white pustules or blisters of pustular psoriasis tend to show up on the hands and feet, but its generalized form can cover the body, cycling from red patches to blisters to scaling.
A complication of unstable plaque psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis can cause affected areas to become so inflamed that they look like burns. This type of redness is dangerous; it throws of the body’s chemistry and requires prompt medical attention. Affecting 15 percent of psoriasis sufferers, psoriatic arthritis attacks both the skin and the joints.
