eczema on back of a girls legAt Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. Studies show about 10 to 20 percent of infants and about 3 percent of adults in the United States are affected by eczema, a group of medical conditions that cause skin inflammation or irritation. Atopic eczema is the most common type of the condition. People who suffer from eczema have itchy and dry skin that can become crusty and blister when excessively scratched.

Eczema is a rash that often appears on the face, hands, wrists, back of the knees, or feet. Darker-skinned people may notice pigmentation changes due to the skin condition. Researchers believe eczema may be linked to the body’s immune system overreacting to an irritant; however, the cause of eczema remains unknown. Cold or hot temperatures, detergent or soap, coarse or rough materials, upper respiratory infections or colds, and animal dander can cause eczema flare-ups.

Itching is a common symptom of eczema. Fortunately, we can provide relief for itching and other symptoms. We can also help patients avoid eczema outbreaks or lessen the severity of them. We take the time to learn about the symptoms and identify the triggers. After examining the areas of the body that are irritated or inflamed, we will discuss treatment options. Then, we tailor treatment plans to meet the needs of the patients. The plans can include recommended lifestyle changes and tips to improve the health of the skin such as moisturizing frequently. Reducing stress and avoiding sudden temperature changes can be other ways to reduce eczema flare-ups. Certain foods and materials such as wool can also lead to outbreaks.
