At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns.

Types of acne scars

While every patient’s skin is unique, there are four basic kinds of scars left by acne:

  • Ice-pick– Deep pits with small diameter.
  • Boxcar – Sometimes referred to as pockmarks, these angular scars may be shallow or deep and have defined vertical edges.
  • Rolling – These wide and shallow scars are the result of damage below the surface of the skin.
  • Hypertrophic – Raised lumps usually resulting from severe acne cysts.

Hyperpigmentation is not technically scarring, but it is red or dark discoloration that persists after a pimple heals.

Restoring your complexion

After an evaluation of your scarring and analysis of your skin, we design a customized plan to restore smooth texture and even tone.

Relatively new acne scars that are red and swollen respond well to topical treatments. Prescription cortisone cream reduces inflammation and professional strength skin lighteners fade discoloration.

Deep skin peels exfoliate the epidermis and revitalize the dermis, reducing shallow scars. Resurfacing with a fractionated laser evens the topography of the skin. Laser therapy stimulates production of collagen, which helps fill scars.

Depressed scars can be raised with dermal filler injections. In some cases, subcision (a needle technique) or a minor surgical procedure is performed first, to release underlying scar tissue.
