At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners, we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. The aging process can be a beautiful experience. Many people say that they feel more confident and comfortable as they get older. However, increasing confidence can be difficult for some who look in the mirror and see a reflection that they no longer recognize. While aging can be great for the mind, it can be hard for the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles, sagging, and loss of hydration are all part of the skin’s natural aging process.
At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, we see patients on a daily basis who think that surgery is the only way to address some of these aging issues. We would like to share with our patients the different ways that skin can be tightened and rejuvenated without surgery. One of these methods is the use of light based therapies such as fractional lasers.
Laser technology is not new to the dermatological world. For decades, laser light has been used to treat a wide array of skin issues, with some of the first being birth marks. As technology has advanced, laser technology has been applied to treat a multitude of skin issues, among those being the visible signs of aging.
Fractional lasers, such as the Palomar 1540, allow you to achieve smooth, even skin tone and texture after a single appointment. They work by dividing light into many microscopic zones. These zones target just a fraction of the skin surface at any given time during treatment. This allows specific areas to be treated while leaving the surrounding skin untouched.
In addition to improving tone and texture, fractional lasers also stimulate collagen production. Collagen is responsible for the elasticity and firmness of the skin. When we are young, our skin is full of collagen, leaving it looking luminous, youthful and supple. But as we age and collagen decreases naturally, the skin can begin to appear thin, loose, and even sagging. The increase in collagen production can tighten skin and smooth out fine lines wrinkles.
