Moles happen to people of all ages and skin tones. The internet has a wide array of “home remedies” to try to get rid of your mole. However, only trained dermatologists know how to safely and effectively get rid of skin moles. With skin cancer being the most prevalent form of cancer, moles should not be handled at home.
If a patient calls with worries about their moles, the first step is an initial consultation. During this visit, our experienced dermatologists evaluate any growths on your skin, from cysts to moles. If there are any suspicious moles, we will schedule and perform a biopsy. If we determine during the consult that a mole needs removed for cosmetic purposes, we will move forward with the removal.
Methods used for mole removal:
- Excision: If a biopsy of a mole is needed, this is the method used. A local anesthetic is used, then the mole is removed. Stitches may be necessary.
- Shave removal: Also called curettage. The mole is shaved down.
- Cryosurgery: Liquid nitrogen freezes and eliminates the mole. This method has little to no scarring.
- Electrocautery: Skin is numbed with anesthetic and heat is applied to the mole using electric current.
