Many patients around Centreville, VA who are interested in turning back the hands of time and erase fine lines and wrinkles are excited to learn about noninvasive cosmetic injectables that are used at local dermatology practices. At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns.

juvedermWhy Botox?

Botox is a special medication that has been used for years in a variety of medical situations, including chronic migraines and overactive bladder. It works specifically on muscles, reducing their ability to contract, and therefore, when used on the muscles of the face, can provide a reduction in wrinkles, folds, and superficial lines. Botox can be used on many areas on the upper third of the face, but is best used for the treatment of:

  • Forehead folds
  • Glabellar lines
  • Crow’s feet

How does Botox work?

Botox reduces muscle contractions, which allows the skin above to smooth out. This is a way to target dynamic lines and wrinkles on the face. Botox does not provide immediate results. Instead, the results are seen over the course of a few days and can last approximately six months before reinjection is required.

What alternatives are available?

Alternative injections may be considered if patients want to treat areas of the face that are not indicated for Botox. This may include collagen stimulators or hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. In fact, these can be combined to create the ultimate “liquid facelift.” Botox is safe to use in conjunction with other injections and may provide optimum improvements in the facial area. Patients can consult their dermatologist about the possibility of combining injections for faster, more dramatic transformations.

What can I expect from Botox?

Botox provides results within several days while the muscles relax along with the facial skin. Once this occurs, the skin does not show fine lines and wrinkles as much as it did before. Patients can look years younger without the need for plastic surgery. Plastic surgery can be expensive, increase the risk of infection, and should only be done in more severe cases due to it being much more invasive. Patients who choose Botox will rarely experience any side effects, which may include short-term tenderness, redness, and itching at the injection site. Many of these effects are not extremely uncomfortable and are tolerable for our patients. Patients will be able to see what Botox can do for them and enjoy the results for many months!

Is Botox cosmetic?

Yes. Botox is an elective procedure and is considered an aesthetic treatment that can be performed at the request of a patient. It can be used on adult men and women who are unhappy with the formation of folds and lines on the skin. Botox is injected directly into the facial muscles with precision to ensure optimum results, and the cost of treatment is determined by our team based on how many vials of Botox are required to achieve the look patients desire. Some areas may require more Botox than others. Additionally, our doctors are extremely conservative in administering Botox to ensure the area is not affected in a negative way. Our professionals would rather inject more Botox than inject too much, as the administration is not immediately reversible.
