ultraviolet light for good; treatment of psoriasis, other skin conditions

At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. Exposure to sunlight boosts vitamin D production and immunity, and lifts spirits. UV light is also therapeutic; it can treat many widespread and distressing conditions, including psoriasis.

Good ultraviolet light treatment

ultraviolet light for good; treatment of psoriasis, other skin conditionsUltraviolet light in controlled amounts can effectively treat the abnormal cell turnover responsible for psoriasis. Unlike age-related skin conditions in which cell turnover slows, psoriasis sufferers’ skin cells grow so fast that they build up on the skin’s surface. The resulting effects are scaly or red patches that can be painful.

Under the supervision of DANV professionals, ultraviolet B light is applied precisely and on a regular basis to halt the build-up of skin cells. Since Narrowband UVB light uses less than 1 percent of the wavelengths of natural sunlight, this artificial light clears psoriasis faster and results in longer remissions than its broadband counterpart.

UVB light is a safe and effective treatment for both psoriasis plaques and another condition, vitiligo, which produces white patches when the production of color-giving pigment decelerates. These conditions can also be treated with other light-based therapies, such as lasers. By delivering precise amounts of light to the problem area based on the thickness of the patient’s skin, the energy generated by the laser stimulates processes such as re-pigmentation for vitiligo.

From its offices in Centreville, Sterling, and Chantilly, DANV is also equipped to offer PUVA, which stands for the medication “Psoralen,” and UVA Light. When combined with this spectrum of light, the psoralen is activated to selectively destroy abnormal cells and prohibit their rapid multiplication, responsible for many uncomfortable and unsightly symptoms.
