At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners, we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. Acne varies n severity from red bumps to inflamed cysts and nodules. When patients have acne, they can take comfort in knowing a dermatological team in the Ashburn area can provide treatment.
Understanding acne’s levels of severity
It is critical to recognize the difference between the following levels of acne and the treatments available:
- Mild – If you have fewer than 30 total lesions including whiteheads, blackheads and inflamed bumps, the acne falls into the “mild” category. It may be treated with over the counter topical medicine and it can take up to eight weeks to see significant improvement.
- Moderate – If you have 20 to 100 whiteheads or blackheads, 15 to 50 inflamed bumps, or 30 to 125 total lesions, you may have moderate acne. Treatment may include a prescription medication. It can take several weeks before there is improvement.
- Severe – If you have multiple inflamed cysts and nodules, the acne may be severe. One of the most severe forms of acne involves inflamed nodules that connect under the skin to other nodules. It can develop on the neck, chest, arms, and buttocks. This type of acne is more common among men who are on steroids and should be treated immediately. Laser therapy can be one of many treatments to consider.
If you have acne, we recommend contacting our team. During an evaluation, we can determine the level of severity of the acne and prescribe the right treatment. We can also provide guidance on how to care for your skin at home to ensure it remains healthy. We provide various treatments depending on the type of acne you may have.
