We also discuss how to minimize the risk of flare-ups and reduce the extent of irritation when it does occur. Home care may include:
- Application of over-the-counter corticosteroid or antihistamine cream as needed.
- Keep skin moisturized by applying appropriate lotion after bathing.
- Apply cold to soothe irritated skin.
- Use sensitive-skin lotions, soaps, and detergents.
- Try to avoid extreme temperatures whenever possible.
- Do not scratch irritated skin.
In addition to home care, your doctor may develop a skin care plan that involves:
- Prescription steroid cream,
- Antibiotics for the treatment of infection, if necessary.
- Oral medication that may reduce allergic response by suppressing the immune system. Immunosuppressant medication is typically used only after all other options have been exhausted.
- Light therapy can be extremely beneficial to soothe irritated, itchy skin. Light therapy is not the same as sitting in the sun or using a tanning bed. The light therapy performed by your dermatologist uses the safest possible UV wavelengths for optimal results with minimal impact on healthy skin.
