At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. The prevention and early detection of skin cancer begins with you. Most skin cancers can be found in their earliest stages during skin examinations. Therefore, it is important to examine your skin from head to toe once a month by using a mirror.

We recommend performing your self-examination in a well-lit room in front of a full-length mirror. While facing the mirror, check your face, ears, neck, chest, and abdomen. Women should check the skin underneath the breasts. Next, examine the underarm area, the sides of your arms, the top and palms of your hands, in between your fingers, and your fingernails. You will want to sit down to check the front of your thighs, shins, top of your feet, in between your toes, and your toenails. For the areas that are difficult to see such as the back of your thighs, calves, and bottom of your feet, we recommend using a handheld mirror. You may need to have someone help you check areas such as your back and scalp. Spend time examining the surface of your skin, inspecting moles, blemishes, freckles, and any other marks. If you notice changes in any of these, it is important to contact our team promptly.

Visiting the dermatologist

When visiting one of our dermatologists for a skin cancer screening, rest assured you are in gentle hands. The dermatologist will examine the areas that concern you to determine if there are early signs of skin cancer. If the doctor detects skin cancer, your treatment options will be discussed. We will answer any questions you may have and tailor a treatment plan to meet your needs.
