top Washingtonian dermatologist offers UV light therapy for psoriasisDermatologists are trained to treat hundreds of skin conditions. At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. We offer UV light therapy to help our psoriasis patients find relief.

Ultraviolet radiation therapy

For decades, psoriasis patients noticed improvement in symptoms after time spent in the sun during the summer months. From this, it was determined that UV rays slow the rapid growth of new skin cells. Psoriasis is a condition in which the immune system reacts to imagined threats by producing excessive skin cells. Thus, UV therapy is effective for psoriasis patients.

To emulate rays of the sun, we expose skin to ultraviolet light on a regular basis. This exposure should not be done at home or through tanning beds. Our trained medical professionals use controlled UVB phototherapy, artificial light, to simulate natural ultraviolet B rays that sun exposure provides. UVA rays are also used, but usually in conjunction with medication.

Treatment

  • We use a UV treatment booth that has light tubes through which UVB or UVA rays are transmitted. By using these booths, we can safely expose the affected areas of your skin to beneficial rays.
  • It will take more than one or two treatments to see desired results and find relief. Usually, partial to full skin clearing occurs at about 20 clinic treatments, except in severe cases.
