Centreville and Reston, VA patients who have been diagnosed with skin cancer may be scared and unsure of their treatment options for their condition. Skin cancer surgery is suggested for some patients and other patients may benefit from alternative options such as photodynamic therapy. At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners, we are dedicated to helping individuals achieve the results they desire and offer a variety of treatments for patients suffering from conditions such as skin cancer.
What is photodynamic therapy?
Photodynamic therapy, also known as PDT, is used by dermatologists to kill cancer cells with light energy. It uses specialized medications that are activated by the light. It starts with a photosensitizing agent that is applied onto the skin. This agent is absorbed by the skin and then the light is directed to the treatment area. The medication then reacts to the light with oxygen that forms a chemical to target and kill the cancer cells. At the same time, the therapy may destroy blood vessels feeding the cancer cells and alert the body’s natural immune system to attack them as well.
What are some of the benefits of using photodynamic therapy as a treatment for skin cancer?
- Little to no scarring
- Precise targeting of the treatment area
- Less invasive than traditional surgery
- No long-term side effects with proper application
- Treatment can be repeated as needed at the same site
- More affordable than other cancer treatment options
