The best time to have a mole or growth checked by a dermatologist in Centreville

Best Time to Check Mole, Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, Inc

The American Academy of Dermatology reports the average person has 10 to 40 moles. Many other growths can also appear on skin. The vast majority are benign, or harmless, but they may be a source of embarrassment, or cause discomfort. While only a small percentage are malignant, early detection is vital. The sooner a suspicious growth is analyzed and treated, the less impact it is likely to have on your health and appearance. At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns.

Moles may be flat or raised, and range in color from flesh tone to tan, brown, pink, red, blue, or black. It is a good idea to check skin all over, monthly, to look for these signs of a mole that could be a problem:

  • A – Asymmetry. If you drew a line down the center, would the halves look different?
  • B – Border. Are the edges of the mole blurred or ragged?
  • C – Color. Does it contain more than one color?
  • D – Diameter. Is the mole larger around than a pencil eraser?
  • E – Evolving. Does the mole look different than others? Has the size, shape, or color changed? Does it itch, hurt, or bleed?

Any one of these situations warrants an immediate appointment at DANV in Centreville. Other skin growths can be difficult for anyone but a dermatologist to accurately identify. It is best to have them checked promptly, for your peace of mind and health.
