At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. If you’ve ever wondered if chemical peels are worth it, we’re here to tell you that they are. Chemical peels done by a knowledgeable and experienced dermatologist are a safe way to remove dead skin cells, making way for fresh, healthy skin cells.

In addition to treating the signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles, chemical peels can also be used to address skin conditions such as:

  • Sun Spots
  • Acne Scars
  • Excessive freckles
  • Hyperpigmentation

There are a few different types of chemical peels: light, medium, and deep.

Light and medium peels are more superficial, they have shorter healing times and usually are based on lactic, glycolic or alpha hydroxyl acid. Deeper peels, usually based on phenol or trichloroacetic acid reach the much deeper layers of skin and require a longer healing time. Light and medium peels are performed far more often than deep peels.

In general, chemical peels are best suited for people with lighter skin tones, although when used properly, some chemical peels can be effective on patients with darker skin.

Your desired outcome is one of the most important factors in determining if chemical peels are worth it for you. During a consultation, you will be given the opportunity to address your issues and share what you would like to accomplish on your skin. This will allow the aesthetician to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for chemical peels. In general, patients who wish to address spots, soften lines, minimize pores, and improve skin texture will be very happy with their results from a chemical peel.

Light chemical peels are very tolerable, most patients report feeling a slight stinging or warming sensation on the skin that goes away within about ten minutes.
