What is Acne?

March 18, 2020

Acne is not just a “rite of passage.”

Without adequate treatment, acne can have long-lasting repercussions for self-esteem, as well as possible scarring.

What is Acne?

Acne is a very common skin condition that affects both teenagers and adults. Although it can vary in severity, we know acne can be painful, distressing, and embarrassing. More severe acne can even cause permanent scarring.

Causes

Acne can have many causes, but the hormonal changes of the teenage years and early adulthood are often involved. Although many people think of acne as a condition of teenagers, it is quite common in adults and can be very frustrating. About 1 in 5 adult women experience acne, some for many years.

Other causes of adult acne:

  • Stress
  • Chemical or occupational exposures
  • Cosmetics

 Treatment Options

Many of our patients have tried over-the-counter regimens but do not find that they are enough to control the acne. We aim to target treatments to your particular needs, concerns, and lifestyle.

We have many methods of treating acne including:

  • Oral medications
  • Topical medications
  • Chemical peels
  • Extractions.
  • Accutane

Since skin changes with time and age, we understand that treatments that work for younger acne sufferers may not work or be too harsh for adults. At Evans Dermatology we strive to help adults with acne find gentle treatments that will control this challenging condition.

Commitment to Teen Acne Home Care Compliance

Our dermatology office in Central Texas has a special interest in helping ensure home care compliance for our teen patients and keeps our entire team focused on this initiative. We know that the regimen of teen acne treatment essential for visible results occurs outside of our office. Because of that, when we prescribe a new skin care routine, we work with the patient to integrate the effective therapy into the reality of their busy daily lives.
