Wine lovers, rejoice! Surely, you’ve heard the good news by now: Red wine is good for you. And with Grapevine’s 31st Annual Grapefest fast approaching, what better way to prepare than by learning about all the amazing red wine skin care benefits?
Clear Skin
Ah, adulthood. Bills, responsibility and… acne? That’s right. Acne doesn’t necessarily go away just because we grow up. However, a 2014 study published by Dermatology & Therapy found an effective treatment for acne by combining resveratrol — a compound found in red wine — with common acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide.
After growing the bacteria that cause acne in the lab, researchers treated the growths with resveratrol, benzoyl peroxide and a combination of both. While all three killed the acne-causing bacteria, the combination of the two compounds had the greatest, longest-lasting results.
Fountain of Youth?
Not only is resveratrol a possible treatment for acne, it may also have anti-aging benefits. In his book Age Gets Better with Wine, Dr. Richard A. Baxter recommends a glass of red wine a day for a longer, healthier life AND glowing skin. It’s important to note that he also says that anything more than a glass a day may reverse those benefits.
But it’s not just drinking red wine that helps. How about a red wine facial? You can find any number of DIY recipes online and some spas even offer the service. People who pamper themselves with red wine facials report glowing, refreshed skin.
Bye-Bye, Sunscreen?
Not really. Nothing takes the place of a good application of sunscreen, but red wine may add another layer of sun protection. Spanish scientists in Barcelona found that flavonoids, a compound in red wine, protect cells from sun damage. Just make sure you follow all other dermatologist-recommended tips to protect your skin from the sun — including sunscreen!
Other Health Benefits
According to many studies, red wine benefits go beyond looking good. There are reportedly a number of health benefits that come from this wonder drink. It is said to…
- Keep your heart healthy
- Help control Type 2 diabetes
- Lower cholesterol
- Delay the onset of Alzheimer’s
- Assist with weight loss
Raise a Glass
But remember, as with everything in life, moderation is key. Too much red wine — or alcohol of any kind — is destructive for you, your skin and your health.
Armed with this knowledge, you can navigate Grapevine’s Grapefest in September like a champ. Grab a glass of vino and enjoy the festival, knowing you’re getting happy skin.
