Living with Psoriasis

October 26, 2015

Psoriasis is an uncomfortable condition. Managing it takes time and consistency. But even worse are the emotional effects of it. Psoriasis can seem to get in the way of relationships, work, and just life. And it causes people to treat you differently.

Living with psoriasis can be embarrassing, especially if it is in a visible area of your body. People often do not understand your condition and can even be frightened by it. Friends may decline your offers to help them in the kitchen. Parties become a thing of the past and it may seem like some people are simply avoiding you.

When you feel alone and left out, it can be psychologically harmful. Combined with the ongoing discomfort of psoriasis, your emotions take a hit. Coping with psoriasis often creates stress, and sadly, stress can make it worse.

It’s unrealistic just to ignore how people respond to you and your psoriasis. In one way or another, we are all dependent on other people. Confidence can erode because of how people see us.

It can help to explain psoriasis to other people. Let them know up front that it is not contagious and that it has nothing to do with poor hygiene. Let them know that it’s an incurable lifetime condition, but you are being treated for it. It’s especially important that your family and friends understand this.

Support groups can also be helpful, whether it’s in person, online or over the phone. Talking with other people dealing with the same condition might make you feel better and less isolated. You might also learn good tips from others about dealing with the condition. One of the best things you can do is to keep going to your doctor and stay involved in your treatment.
