light therapy eczema treatment from dermatologist in ashburn area

At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns. Eczema or atopic dermatitis affects people of all ages from newborns to senior adults. Many live with the skin condition, which is an itchy red rash. It can appear all over the body, but it is often found behind the elbows or the knees. Babies can develop eczema on the face, the scalp, chest, back, and outer arms and legs.

Light Therapy Eczema Treatment from Dermatologist in Ashburn AreaIdentifying the triggers of eczema

Although the exact cause of eczema is unknown, triggers of the skin condition include:

  • Irritants – soaps and detergents, dish washing liquids, shampoos, bubble baths, disinfectants such as chlorine, and contact with juices from vegetables, fresh fruits, and meats
  • Allergens – pets, pollen, mold, dandruff, and house dust mites
  • Foods – eggs, soy and dairy products, wheat, nuts, and seeds
  • Microbes – viruses, certain fungi, and certain bacteria
  • Hot or cold temperatures
  • Perspiration from exercise
  • Stress
  • Hormones

Exploring treatment for eczema

We can prescribe oral medication when the condition is severe. We are also equipped to provide UV light therapy or phototherapy. For treatment, we used ultraviolet B light, which is the most beneficial portion of natural sunlight for skin conditions such as eczema. Light therapy can reduce the itch and increase vitamin D production as well as increase bacteria-fighting systems in the skin.
