Common types of eczema and general treatments:
- Atopic dermatitis: Most common form. This form usually affects people with asthma, hay fever, or family history of eczema. It typically forms during childhood but can start at any age. Treatment can include products designed for skin moisturizing, steroid creams or ointments, antibiotics for any area that may be infected due to excessive scratching, or ultraviolet light.
- Contact dermatitis: There are two types of contact eczema – irritant contact or allergic contact. Irritant contact dermatitis can occur after touching an irritant once or after contact repeatedly. Allergic contact often occurs after touching certain materials that trigger allergic responses (nickel, cosmetics, and poison ivy are all examples). Treatment may include skin moisturizers and steroid medications. If any infection occurs, antibiotics may also be used.
- Neurodermatitis: Can develop in spots that people often scratch. The outbreak doesn’t usually get bigger but can grow thick, deeply wrinkled and infected. The main treatment is to stop scratching the area. Topical steroid medications are used.
