Practicing Self-Care in Fort Worth

July 7, 2017

Between family, work and friends, who has time for self-care? You do! If you think taking time for yourself is selfish, remember that without self-care, you’ll be too worn out to take care of anyone else! Make a little time to pamper yourself and all those obligations won’t feel so overwhelming. Need ideas? Fort Worth has plenty of options for rest, relaxation and fun! Let’s look at a few of them.

Self-Care for Your Body

Everyone knows they should eat right, drink water and exercise. But there are other things you can do to make sure you’re in tip-top shape. Consider adding a 10-minute daily meditation to your routine. Meditation increases happiness and health and decreases depression and anxiety. Even 10 quick minutes a day will make a difference! Also, check out the Fort Worth branch of the Kadampa Meditation Center for guided meditation classes.

If you sit all day, set an alarm so you remember to get up, walk around and stretch every 20 to 30 minutes. Throughout the day, stave off stress by practicing deep breathing. An excellent way to get some deep breathing is in yoga. Make sure you check out Yoga in Sundance Square Plaza every other Saturday morning.

Self-Care for Your Mind

Facebook, Snapchat, Netflix, text messages… there’s no end to the notifications in our digital lifestyles. Try a digital detox to clear your mind. See if you can go a whole day without staring at a screen. Instead, go out in nature, journal or dance to your favorite band.

Or feed your mind with knowledge and soul with beauty by taking yourself on a solo date to one of the Kimball Art Museum’s Friday Evening Lectures series. Or check out an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden

Self-Care for Your Skin

It might be tempting to skip the nightly face wash. Or maybe you’re the opposite and are constantly trying the “next big thing” in skincare, never giving your skin a chance to normalize. Whichever camp you fall into, take a step toward the middle. It’s important to take the time to truly care for your skin.

Even if you don’t use any products or wear makeup, your skin needs a wash each night, as it accumulates dirt and grime from the day. Skin repairs itself while we sleep, and it does this best when it’s clean. If, on the other hand, you jump from one product to the next, you could be aggravating any skin issues you already suffer from or even creating more.

Speaking of sleep, not only does a good night’s sleep help refresh the mind, but it’s also good for the skin. Setting up a nightly skincare routine helps prepare your mind and body for sleep.

Find out exactly what your skin needs by setting up an appointment with Dr. Durham, Dr. Marra or Dr.Thrash  at U.S. Dermatology Partners South Hulen.
