Flake Off – The Trick to Do-It-Yourself Exfoliation

April 1, 2020

THE TRICK TO DO-IT-YOURSELF EXFOLIATION, says Jennifer Sawaya, MD, a dermatologist in Scottsdale, Arizona, is to be gentle.

“Overzealous scrubbing can do more harm than good, causing inflammation or even scarring,” she says. To avoid problems, choose a technique that’s a good match for your skin type. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, skip the brushes and sponges and try an alpha hydroxy acid like glycolic acid. If you have oily skin, you may be fine with a scrub or a chemical treatment. If you’re acne-prone, try a product with salicylic acid to unclog pores. “If you want a bit more aggressive treatment, consider using a cleansing brush every day,” Sawaya says.

No matter which technique you try, use gentle, circular motions and always follow up with a moisturizer.
