At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners,  we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Sterling area with their skin care concerns. If you are plagued with difficult areas of fat that won’t seem to respond to diet and exercise, there is a non-invasive answer to your problem. Many patients in the Sterling area visit us frustrated with areas of their body that seem to “hold on” to fat. The abdomen and love handles are two common areas. To address these areas, we offer patients CoolSculpting.

Patients Recieiving CoolSculpting treatmentCoolSculpting is a state of the art way to combat unwanted fat and improve body contours. In the past, liposuction or tummy tucks were the only effective ways to get rid of stubborn fat. It required anesthesia, incisions, and recovery time. CoolSculpting is an alternative to conventional plastic surgery with no needles or surgery.

CoolSculpting works by freezing the unwanted fat. The freezing processes damages fat cells prompting the body to eliminate them naturally as waste. This process is called apoptosis. Patients are left with beautiful, natural looking body contours that will gradually improve in the months following treatment.

CoolSculpting is an in-office procedure. A protective gel is applied and the targeted area of skin and fat is drawn into the specialized CoolSculpting panels to begin the procedure. The vacuum pressure gradually starts cooling the fat cells until the point of freezing. You are able to read, relax, or even work while you are undergoing treatment. The entire process usually takes 1-2 hours. Patients will not feel pain, just firm pressure. Afterward, there is no downtime. You are able to go back to work on go on with your day as normal, unlike invasive plastic surgery procedures with long recovery periods.

Side effects are minimal and may include some numbness or redness near the treatment area, but this will resolve within a few days.

Treatment areas can include the love handles, flanks, abdomen, and back. Candidates for CoolSculpting should be in good general health and within a healthy weight range. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss program and is not ideal for those who need to address excessive amounts of fat.
