How does PRP work?
The idea behind collagen induction therapy and PRP injections is to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen. As we age, collagen production declines which is what leads to many skin issues such as deep lines and wrinkles.
Platelets are the vital cells that contain growth factors for many aspects of the body. During CIT-PRP treatments, the patients’ own platelets are removed through a small blood draw. Then, using a special machine, the platelet rich plasma is separated from the blood to yield a high concentration of platelets.
During the procedure, a small, sterile needle is used to make micro-factures in the skin. When this is done, the extracted platelets are injected into the skin and activated, releasing the important growth factors to induce collagen production and healing.
Collagen induction therapy begins with the use of numbing cream across the entire treatment area. A needle is then used to deliver hyaluronic acid in the skin along with the PRP. Each session can last anywhere from 30-60 minutes. Most patients need anywhere from 3-6 treatments scheduled about every 6 weeks for optimal results. PRP injections can be done on many areas of the body, the most common are: face, neck, hands, chest, and abdomen. Patients will enjoy the results of smoother, fresher, more voluminous skin for up to 10 years after treatment.
There are minimal side effects from PRP injections; the most common are mild swelling and pinkness to the skin for 1-2 days following the procedure. There is no down time with PRP injections; patients are free to resume typical daily activities. Washing the face, exercising, and applying make-up should be avoided for 24 hours.
