The word cancer is enough to strike fear in anyone’s heart. If you have been recently diagnosed with skin cancer, you are probably unsure of what to do. At Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia, now a part of U.S. Dermatology Partners, we are dedicated to assisting patients in the Centreville area with their skin care concerns.
Definition of melanoma:
Any cancer begins with cells in your body growing in an uncontrolled way. Melanoma is a cancer that starts in a specific type of skin cell. Melanocytes produce a brown pigment called melanin, which gives the skin its tan or brown color. It protects under layers of your skin from some of the sun effects. Melanoma begins in these melanocyte cells. You may hear this type of cancer also referred to as cutaneous melanoma and malignant melanoma. They can develop anywhere on the skin but typically appear on chests and backs in men and the legs on women.
- Wide excision surgery: Removes the melanoma area and a small amount of normal skin around it. The normal skin is removed to ensure no cancerous cells are in them. This is the most effective treatment for early stage melanoma.
- Education: We believe in helping a patient understand exactly the treatment they are receiving, and understand their condition thoroughly. We also follow-up with skin checks and discussions about how to prevent further melanoma.
- If your melanoma has advanced and spread beyond just your skin, into your lymph nodes, there are different treatments based upon each case. We will guide you through step-by-step!
