Clinical Research Frequently Asked Questions

SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN A CLINICAL TRIAL?

By participating in a clinical trial, you have the potential to improve your skin condition. Additionally, your participation helps advance the field of medical and cosmetic dermatology. You will make it possible for other patients to reap the same benefits you experience.

WHAT SAFEGUARDS ARE IN PLACE TO PROTECT MY HEALTH DURING THE TRIAL?

You will receive a thorough written and verbal description of what you need to know to make an informed decision about joining a research trial. A consent form will also include a detailed description of potential risks and benefits, information about the study duration, and contact information for the physician overseeing the trial and the company sponsoring the trial. All clinical trials will adhere to a strict protocol that outlines exactly what will take place during the course of the study.

WILL MY PARTICIPATION BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?

All medical, personal, or other information obtained during a clinical trial will remain confidential. Additionally, this information is protected by state and federal regulations governing clinical research. Your personal information will only be released with your clear authorization.

IS THERE A COST ASSOCIATED WITH PARTICIPATION?

In almost all cases, medical care, including exams, laboratory tests, and medications are provided to you at no charge. You may also be reimbursed for specific trials. It is typically a flat fee to cover your time and travel expenses.

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF A CLINICAL TRIAL? HOW LONG IS EACH OFFICE VISIT?

Every clinical trial is different. You’ll receive this information with your consent paperwork. The length of your office visits may vary. You can expect your initial visit to last between 30-90 minutes, while following visits may be shorter in time.

WHO PROVIDES DIAGNOSIS AND MEDICAL ADVICE? WHO DETERMINES MY ELIGIBILITY FOR A CLINICAL TRIAL?

A Board Certified physician will provide a diagnosis and offer medical advice. The physician conducting the trial will determine your eligibility for a specific clinical trial.

WHAT CRITERIA DETERMINES MY ELIGIBILITY?

Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria are used to determine your eligibility. Inclusion criteria are characteristics (e.g., acne, spider veins) that you must have to join a clinical trial. Exclusion criteria are characteristics that you cannot have in order to participate (e.g., skin resurfacing before an acne product trial). These criteria will be outlined in the consent documentation. Criteria varies per clinical trial.

I’M AN EXISTING PATIENT OF HIGHLAND DERMATOLOGY; CAN MY PHYSICIAN OVERSEE MY PARTICIPATION IN THE TRIAL?

Not every physician conducts clinical trials; therefore, another physician may oversee your participation in the clinical trial. You can continue to see your established physician for regular office visits (outside of the trial).

CAN I LEAVE A CLINICAL TRIAL AT ANY TIME?

You can stop your participation in a clinical trial at any time (no reason necessary). You can tell us why you are leaving the study, but it is not mandatory. Depending on the clinical trial, your physician may offer you advice (e.g., there should be a gradual withdrawal from medication).
