At the Center for Aesthetic and Laser Medicine (CALM) in Carrollton, we offer a full range of dermatology solutions to help our patients look and feel their best and maintain optimal skin health. In order to offer exceptional quality care, we’ve incorporated some of the latest technologies into our practice, including the innovative Morpheus8 system. To help patients better understand how Morpheus8 treatment can improve their appearance and skin health, Dr. Lisa Guidry Pruett has taken some time to answer frequently asked questions about this state-of-the-art treatment technology.
What is Morpheus8?
Dr. Pruett started by telling us a little about the history of this technology saying, “Morpheus8 was created to address the adipose cells that create double chin or jowling. Combining radiofrequency and microneedling technology, we can remove excess fat cells and deliver results that were only possible with advanced cosmetic surgeries.” In addition to its use for fat removal, Morpheus8 also stimulates collagen production to improve the appearance and elasticity of the skin, making it a unique and effective solution to address scars, stretch marks, and other imperfections.
Should I Consider Mopheus8 Treatment?
Dr. Pruett said, “While Morpheus8 was originally developed for the reduction of double chin, the unique use of microneedling in combination with radiofrequency technology allows us to address numerous concerns.” These treatment options include all of the following:
- Reducing the appearance of acne scars
- Smoothing the texture of the skin and tightening the skin
- Repairing damage from prolonged or excessive sun exposure
- Improving the appearance of deep lines, wrinkles, and scars
- Shrinking pores that have become enlarged
- Removing or decreasing the appearance of stretch marks
- Maintaining the results of facelifts and other surgical procedures
What Happens Before Morpheus8 Treatment?
Prior to recommending any dermatological treatment plan, we will ask you to visit us at the CALM office in Carrollton for a consultation. During this visit, we’ll complete an examination, answer your questions, discuss your health history, and help you determine whether or not Morpheus8 is the best option for your needs. Be prepared to discuss all of the following:
- Current medications (prescription & OTC)
- Health history
- Surgical history
- Dermatological treatment history
- Goals for Morpheus8 treatment
What Can I Expect During the Procedure?
On the day of your Morpheus8 treatment, we’ll likely begin by taking images of the area to be treated. This will give us a good guide to determine how much progress you’ve made after treatment. Then, we’ll numb the area we’re planning to address. Depending on your individual comfort level and the area we’re working on, we may use topical numbing ointments or, to achieve deeper numbing, injectable medications may be administered. Once you’re comfortable, we’ll start the treatment process. We begin by placing the handpiece over the targeted area. When the handpiece is in place, the microneedles make tiny perforations in the skin and deliver the radiofrequency pulses deeper into the skin’s layers. After a preset time, the handpiece is picked up, shifted over, and replaced. This cycle is repeated until the entire treatment area is addressed. This usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. According to Dr. Pruett, “An additional overlap area will also be treated. This ensures the final result will blend seamlessly with the appearance of your skin. We may also repeat the application up to two more times as long as the target area isn’t too bony.”
What Happens After My Treatment?
For the first 24 hours after your treatment, you will only want to apply products that we recommend. We will discuss these during your visit. For best results and decreased downtime, Alastin Nectar should be applied twice daily 2 weeks before and 1 week after your Morpheus8 treatment. After 24 hours, you will be able to apply moisturizers and sunscreen and makeup.
Dr. Pruett reminds patients, “You should use a gentle facial cleanser daily but avoid scrubbing at the skin. You will also need to be very careful if your skin is exposed to sunlight in the 24 hours after your treatment as lack of sunscreen dramatically increase your risk for sun damage.” The mild swelling and skin redness that may occur immediately following a Morpheus8 session are among the very few reported side effects of this treatment. Some patients also have small scabs that appear and flake away over the microneedle sites. And, there may also be some discomfort that is typically manageable with over the counter pain relievers. Within a few days of treatment, you should begin seeing improvement with the most noticeable results appearing after three weeks. Patients may continue to see improvement for several months after the treatment session.
How Many Morpheus8 Treatments do I Need?
According to Dr. Pruett, “We recommend that every patient schedule a series of 3 treatments 4 weeks apart. This will allow us to give you the optimal result with little, if any, social downtime.”
Are the Results of Morpheus8 Permanent?
According to Dr. Pruett, “The advanced Morpheus8 technology allows us to offer deep penetrating treatment that is very long-lasting. But, we’re all going to keep aging, experience sun damage, and have other injuries or damage to the skin that may require retreatment to maintain the results of Morpheus8. For this reason, we may recommend retreatment during an annual skin exam.”
