An effective moisturizer fights dryness, reinforces your skin barrier, reduces oil production, evens out rough texture, and can even help you look younger by plumping out fine lines. But many of these creams can feel thick and goopy, causing you to forget about it altogether. So how do you find one that you actually want to use? Here’s what dermatologists have to say.
How to choose and use the best moisturizer for men
Mind your skin type: “With so many moisturizers on the market, you want to look for one that suits your specific skin needs, depending on whether you are dry, acne-prone, or sensitive,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
“In general, thicker creams do a better job moisturizing the skin, but some men simply prefer lotion,” adds Bobbak Monsouri, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at U.S. Dermatology Partners in Texas. If you’re on the dry side or dealing with signs of aging, you may prefer a thicker cream. Men with oily or acne-prone skin will do better with lightweight, gel-like lotion instead.
